The NBA playoffs are far from being over; however, Tuesday’s draft lottery will give basketball bettors and fans an idea of how the Draft would shape up. The lottery, which is used to determine which teams get the first three picks in the annual draft, gives the greatest chance to the worst team (based on their regular season record) and the thinner chance to the best team participating in the lottery.
Once the top three selections are determined, the remaining teams qualified for the lottery are placed in the draft from worst to best. Of the 30 teams in the NBA a total of 16 franchises made it to the post season while another 14 teams were entered in a Pre Draft lottery.
Based on the regular season stats, the Orlando Magic own 25% chances of locking the first pick (20-62 regular season mark). But that doesn’t mean they have secured the first pick in this year’s draft. Against what many bettors may think, since the NBA introduced the Modern Lottery system in 1990, the team with the best odds of winning that first pick has been the least favorite team to get it. Only four teams with the worst record the past season have won the first pick in the last 28 years: The Nets in 1990 (the Nets took Derrick Coleman), the Cavs in 2003 (LeBron James) and Orlando in 2004 (Dwight Howard).
The Charlotte Bobcats and Cleveland Cavaliers also have the chance to get the first pick. With 19.9% and 15.6% odds, respectively, the two teams have the chance to jump the Magic in draft positioning and bring some new blood for next season. The 2013 NBA Draft is scheduled for June 27th. Prospects at this year’s draft include NCAA stars Nerlens Noel (Kentucky), Ben McLemore (Kansas), Otto Porter (Georgetown), Victor Oladipo (Indiana), Trey Burke (Michigan), Michael Carter-Williams (Syracuse), Anthony Bennett (UNLV) and Alex Len (Maryland).
